CAS and the municipal government of Shanghai will joint efforts to set up a research center for a new botanical garden in Shanghai. To be completed for the 2010 EXPO in the metropolitan, the projected 200-haectare Chenshan Botanic Gardens will be sited in the Songjiang District 20 km west of Shanghai and aims to become a world renowned institute undertaking research on the local flora, conservation and ornamental horticulture.

    A consultative conference on the blueprint for the center was held recently at the CAS Shanghai Branch, and was attended by senior officials from the CAS Shanghai Branch, CAS Bureau of Domestic Cooperation, and Shanghai Landscape Administration. After listening to the proposal for the establishment of the center made by Prof. CHEN Xiaoya, director of the CAS Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology, the meeting focused discussions on such issues as the center's mission and research directions, management system and operational mechanism, and relations between the center and the garden.

    The meeting is a step to enforce the agreement to co-establish the new Chenshan Botanical Garden signed by CAS President LU Yongxiang and Shanghai Mayor HAN Zheng six months earlier.

    According to the agreement, the Center will focus on botany, ecology and the environment, making contributions to the social and economic development and for a sustainable ecological and environmental development of the country and the city, providing services for the development of botany and the protection of biological resources. In light of the objectives, the center will carry out studies on taxonomy and evolution, biodiversity, genetics and development, ecology and protection of environmental resource protection.
